Immediate Temporary Closure Due to Distemper (CDV) Outbreak
Memphis Animal Services is actively responding to a canine parvovirus outbreak within our shelter. Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease that primarily affects puppies. Vaccination is the most effective way to protect dogs from the virus, and puppies should begin their vaccine series at approximately 6 weeks of age and continue receiving boosters as recommended by a veterinarian.
Out of an abundance of caution, Memphis Animal Services will temporarily suspend intake operations through July 21 while the shelter undergoes enhanced cleaning, disinfection, and additional disease-control measures.
The shelter remains open for adult dog and cat adoptions during regular business hours: Tuesday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Community members looking to adopt are encouraged to visit, as adoptions remain one of the most meaningful ways to support the animals in our care.
We recognize this temporary disruption may impact our community, rescue partners, fosters, volunteers, and staff. Every decision made during this response is guided by our commitment to protecting the health and well-being of the animals in our care.
We appreciate the public’s patience, understanding, and support as we work through this situation.
