Understanding the Urgent List ProcessDue to the high number of dogs entering Memphis Animal Services each day and the shelter’s overall capacity for care, including kennel space, staffing, and available resources, dogs over 4 months of age are placed on the urgent list immediately upon intake.
For stray dogs, Tennessee state law requires a 72-hour stray hold while we attempt to locate an owner. During this time, the dog is not yet considered property of Memphis Animal Services. Owner surrender dogs do not have a stray hold period.
If you would like to receive a courtesy notification before euthanasia is scheduled, please notify staff during intake so your contact information can be documented. Courtesy calls are typically made the day before euthanasia.
Important Information
- Notification requests must be made during intake.
- A notification call does not guarantee additional hold time.
- Placement options often must happen quickly due to ongoing intake volume and limited space.
- We encourage anyone bringing in a pet to help network the animal with friends, family, rescues, or on social media whenever possible.
Thank you for helping us provide care and placement opportunities for Memphis animals.
