Memphis Animal Services: Operational Updates & Safety Protocols
Memphis Animal Services will reopen to the public Saturday, April 12 at 12:00 PM. While we’re excited to welcome the community back, please note that dog intake will remain closed until further notice. Only certain areas of the shelter will be accessible, but we are open again for adoptions, fostering, owner reclaims, and lost/found services.
As always, the health and safety of our animals remain our top priority. Every dog available for adoption, foster, or rescue has gone through a multi-step screening process. This includes PCR testing, which detects whether a dog is actively shedding the distemper virus which caused MAS’ closure for the past month, and antibody testing, which checks if they have built up protective number of antibodies. Dogs that pass both tests are considered “green” and are cleared to leave the shelter. Those who test negative for the virus but have not yet developed antibodies may be eligible for foster care. These dogs will remain in quarantine, receive booster vaccines, and be retested every two weeks until they reach a protective antibody level.
Because this health protocol is so critical to maintaining a safe environment, we will remain closed to intake. At this time, we are only accepting dogs through Emergency Intake Protocols, which apply to cases where an animal control officer is called out to help a dog that is sick or injured, in immediate danger, or poses a public safety risk. These temporary restrictions are in place to prevent overcrowding and allow us to continue prioritizing the care and health of animals already in the shelter.
