Memphis Animal Shelter Notice
Following our earlier announcement regarding a Distemper (CDV) outbreak, we received new information regarding symptomatic and CDV-positive dogs from additional rooms in our shelter. Due to the highly contagious nature of CDV and out of an abundance of caution for our shelter population and the community at large, we will be closing the Shelter through Tuesday (or longer, as needed) to all intake and all community customers. Animal control officers will respond to only dangerous/vicious animal complaints and sick/injured animals.
During this period, MAS officers will take sick/injured animals to the Animal Emergency Center for evaluation and take injured animals to the Humane Society for housing with assistance from MAS staff.
MAS will continue to test and treat dogs as able and work with our veterinary medicine partners to determine the most humane outcomes for all infected animals.
Dogs currently in foster care have not been exposed and remain available for permanent adoption.
“We are deeply saddened by this development,” stated shelter manager Mary Claire Borys. “We ask for the community’s support while we work through this heartbreaking situation and will share updated information early next week.”
